๐ The Lagos context
Iron rods โ reinforcement steel โ are the skeleton of every concrete structure, going into the foundation, columns, beams and slabs that hold a building up. They are sold by the tonne and by the length, in gauges that step up with the load: 8mm and 10mm for slabs and stirrups, 12mm and 16mm for columns and beams, and heavier still for serious structures. Getting the right gauge in the right place is a structural decision, not a place to cut corners.
Steel is one of the most globally-linked materials on a Lagos site, so its price tracks two things at once: the world steel market and the naira. Much of what is used is locally rolled (from scrap), with imported rods at the higher end, and a weak naira pushes both up quickly. This is why rod prices can jump sharply and why builders try to buy the full structural quantity in one window rather than in dribs and drabs.
Quality is the quiet risk here. Underweight or "light" rods โ rolled thinner than the stated gauge to save steel โ are a real problem in the market; a bundle that feels suspiciously light usually is. Buy from established dealers (Owode-Onirin and the Trade Fair complex are the big Lagos markets), weigh a sample if you can, and insist on the correct gauge. On a structural build the rods are not the place to chase the lowest price โ they are the place to be sure of what you are getting.
