What to check before buying
- Battery warranty: 8 years / 160,000km is the new standard for tier-1 brands. A used EV with expired battery warranty is a big risk.
- Charging connector: Most Lagos public networks use CCS2 or GB/T. Some private imports (Tesla) have proprietary connectors that need adapters.
- Service network: Stallion (BYD, Innoson) and Coscharis (MG) have the best EV service in Lagos. For other brands, confirm service availability before purchase.
- Battery health (used): For used EVs, demand a State of Health (SoH) report. Below 85% is a bargaining point; below 75% is a deal-killer.
- Import costs: EVs attract the same import duties as petrol cars in Nigeria (35% duty + 35% levy on used). Customs sometimes misclassify EVs.
