📝 Why this price matters

Rice is Nigeria's most important food — and its most politically sensitive. At ₦61,125 for a 50kg bag of imported long grain, prices are actually 16% lower than a year ago thanks to improved domestic harvests and reduced demand after the 2024 shock. But "lower" is relative — three years ago, this same bag cost ₦28,000. The government's import substitution policy has boosted local rice production (Kebbi, Ebonyi), but domestic rice remains more expensive than Thai imports in most Lagos markets. The Dangote Rice project and other industrial farming initiatives promise to close the gap, but for now, Lagos remains dependent on imports that arrive through Apapa port and fan out to Mile 12, Daleko, and every neighbourhood market.
