Inverter & Battery in Lagos — LiFePO4 vs Tubular
Battery types · sizing guide · brands ranked · lifespan & cost per cycle
Inverter + battery is the quiet backbone of every working Lagos backup-power setup. The battery is where most decisions go wrong — wrong chemistry, wrong size, no-name brand. This page sets it straight: lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) beats tubular lead-acid in almost every use case, with reasons and prices.
| Spec | LiFePO4 | Tubular lead-acid |
|---|---|---|
| Lifespan | 8–12 years | 3–5 years |
| Cycle count | 3,000–6,000 | ~1,200 |
| Usable depth of discharge | 90%+ | 50% |
| Maintenance | None | Water top-ups, every 3 mo |
| Weight | ½ tubular for same kWh | Heavy |
| Warranty | 5–10 yrs | 1–2 yrs |
| Upfront cost per kWh | ~₦650K–₦950K | ~₦350K–₦450K |
Lifecycle cost (cost per kWh delivered over lifespan): LiFePO4 ~₦25-₦40, tubular ~₦80-₦150. Lithium is cheaper long-term despite the upfront premium.
Lithium (LiFePO4)
Tier 1 (best warranty + reliability): Pylontech, BYD, Felicity Solar. These are Chinese tier-1 manufacturers with global supply chains — batteries come with 5-10 year warranties and replacement parts available in Lagos. Tier 2 (good value): Luminous Lithium, Genus.
Tubular lead-acid
Luminous (most widely available), Trojan (US import, premium), Exide. Avoid no-name imports — they typically die within 12-18 months. The brand difference is more pronounced for tubular than lithium because the chemistry has more failure modes.
Sizing is simple: (a) sum the watts of each appliance you''ll run; (b) multiply by hours you''ll run it; (c) divide by usable battery capacity. For LiFePO4, usable is 90% of rated; for tubular, 50%.
Example: small home using 5 kWh per night → LiFePO4 needs 5.6 kWh rated (e.g. 2× 3 kWh modules). Same load on tubular needs 10 kWh rated (e.g. 4× 200Ah/12V batteries in series). Always oversize 20% for cloudy/rainy days.
If you''re planning solar, the battery is 40-60% of system cost. Choose well.
Inverter covers quiet hours; generator handles high loads. Most Lagos premium homes run this hybrid setup.
