Monocrystalline vs polycrystalline — and why it barely matters now
For years the standard advice was to pay extra for monocrystalline panels because they were meaningfully more efficient. That gap has narrowed to the point where, at Lagos prices, the decision usually comes down to roof area rather than technology. Mono panels produce a little more per square metre, so they matter when your roof is small; if you have space, the cheaper panel per watt is generally the better buy.
The number that actually matters is cost per watt. Divide the panel price by its wattage and compare across sizes: a cheap 200W panel and a pricier 550W panel can work out to very different money for the same delivered energy, and the bigger panels are usually cheaper per watt because you need fewer mounting rails, fewer connectors and less labour to install the same capacity.
What a panel warranty in Lagos is actually worth
Panels are typically sold with two separate warranties: a product warranty covering manufacturing defects (often 10–12 years) and a performance warranty guaranteeing the panel still produces some percentage of its rating after 25 years. Both are honoured by the manufacturer, not the dealer — which in practice means a warranty is only as useful as the importer's willingness to process a claim years later.
Ask who handles a warranty claim before you buy, and get the answer in writing on the invoice. A panel bought from a trader who will not be findable in five years has a warranty in name only, and panels are the component you least expect to touch again after installation.
