About this school — Methodist Girls' High School
Methodist Girls' High School Yaba, founded 1879 (one year after Methodist Boys), is the sister institution and one of the oldest continuously-operating girls' secondary schools in Nigeria — pre-dating Nigerian amalgamation by 35 years. The Yaba campus produced generations of Nigerian professional women during the period when few Nigerian schools would educate girls to secondary standard: mid-20th-century civil servants, judges, doctors, and businesswomen. Methodist mission tradition of academic seriousness combined with disciplined religious ethos. Day-only. Fees remain moderate for a school of its historical stature, consistent with the Methodist mission of accessible-but-serious education. WAEC pass rates are consistently 80-90% credit-pass in core subjects — sciences and English traditionally the top of the subject table. Admission process
JS1 entry via school entrance examination held in March, June, and September. Examination covers English, Mathematics, and Verbal Reasoning at end-of-primary level plus a short written composition. Application fee ₦8,000, non-refundable. Sibling and Old Girls' children priority is significant — approximately 30-40% of any Year 7 intake is legacy families. Methodist family priority within the academic-merit ranking. Common Entrance results considered supplementarily. SS1 transfer entry available for pupils with strong JS3 results, subject to space. Facilities include the original 19th-century assembly hall (restored 2001), three academic blocks (a two-storey primary block, three-storey junior secondary block, and senior secondary annex), three science laboratories (physics, chemistry, biology), a Methodist chapel used for daily and Sunday services, a library (~8,000 volumes with a small heritage collection dating from the 1900s), a computer laboratory, an art room, a home economics room, and sports facilities (a netball court, basketball court, small football pitch, and hockey area).
