Ikoyi has the shallowest saline depth of the three Island areas — 146 metres per geophysical studies. Despite being Lagos's most prestigious residential area, its colonial-era infrastructure means many older buildings still have non-functional pipe connections to the Lagos Water Corporation. Newer developments have invested in deep boreholes (200m+) with treatment, but older Ikoyi residences rely heavily on tanker delivery. The Ikoyi water tanker drivers' association has operated from the area for over 40 years, making it one of Lagos's most organised water delivery networks.
💡 Water tips

2Older Ikoyi buildings may still have Lagos Water Corporation pipe connections — test if yours works (unlikely)

⚖️ Legal: borehole permits
Under the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law, drilling a borehole without LASWARCO authorization is illegal. Fine: ₦500,000 + up to 1 month imprisonment. Always obtain a permit before drilling, and hire a licensed hydrogeological surveyor to assess your site.
LASWARCO permit required. ₦500,000 fine + 1 month imprisonment for drilling without authorization.
Borehole drilling is not recommended in Ikoyi — the groundwater is too saline and would require an expensive reverse-osmosis system. Most residents use tanker delivery.
